Whilst you can arrange local installation if required (within the Greater Manchester area), our surrounds are very simple to install. Armed with pencil, tape measure, two appropriate screws, two raw plugs and a drill, your Urbanfire surround should be securely installed inside 15 minutes. (If I can do it anyone can! - director).
How compatible is my Urban fire surround ? Gas Fire, Electric, Real Flames, Gels, Feature Only…?
Our Urbanfire surrounds have been used in conjunction
with most available heat sources, and we have yet to experience
problems with compatibility. Our surrounds are laser cut from a single
sheet of high quality stainless steel and whilst the cavity/opening is
by default of “industry standard” aperture, it can be re-designed to
accommodate our customer’s wishes (see our bespoke page).
N.B. As with all metal products, fire surrounds will conduct heat, and expand/contract depending on temperature.
How large a cavity / opening am I able to have, and what are the limiting factors?
As a design piece, the only limiting factor is the size of the sheets of steels we work with. As we are able to obtain quality stainless steel with dimensions 3000mm x 1500mm, we would only struggle with the most cave-like!!!
If you are going to have a “real fire” (coal / logs etc), other factors do however come into play. So as to ensure efficient smoke extraction, (and therefore avoid a smoke filled room), the size of cavity you can use in your Urban fire surround (or any surround for that matter) is restricted by the height and diameter of your flue. There is a specific calculation to work this out. Please contact us for assistance.
Does my Urbanfire surround require insulating?
Our experience suggests “No”. However, as some people (including one of our directors) have a penchant for “real” fires, we can incorporate materials to assist in dissipating heat from the steel surround to prevent excessive conduction. Please contact us.
All fires generate heat and obviously become very hot and contact should not be made with the metal surround in these situations. Follow the same precautions that you would with a hot radiator. WE CANNOT ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY MISHAPS OCCURRING THROUGH USING URBANFIRE SURROUNDS, PARTICULARLY WHERE APPROPRIATE PRECAUTIONS TO PREVENT CONTACT WITH THE SURROUND ARE NOT FOLLOWED.
How do I maintain the appearance of my Urbanfire surround?
Stainless steel is easily marked by grease from finger prints, and care must be taken not to dent the surround. We recommend the use of a soft cloth and baby oil, dabbing the oil on the cloth and wiping across the surround in the direction of the “grain” of the stainless steel.
(Also we recommend that you check with your home contents insurance that you are covered for accidental damage (dents/scratches etc)
Do Urbanflames.com sell hearths, gas fires and other accessories etc?
Currently the only accessory that we sell in conjunction with the Urbanfire surrounds is a “made to order” stainless steel hearth. (a polished stainless steel sheet laser cut to your requested dimensions, supplied with “felt feet”)
However, during 2005 we will be expanding not only our product range, but also our range of accessories. Watch this space!!!
